Alphabet’s Google Improves Two-Step Verification

Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL), the parent of Google, has made some changes to two-step verification to make it less of a burden to Gmail and Google Apps users. The tech giant has developed a way to eliminate the need for users to have to manually type in a code from a text or email to sign in.

The company has introduced a new feature that allows the user to verify sign-in requests by simply tapping “yes” or “no” when a push notification arises. This new feature successfully eliminates the verification prompt where requests are sent to the user via email or text. The new security feature is simpler because a Gmail prompt appears when users are trying to log into apps. The prompt asks the user to authorize or deny access to the login, making it significantly easier than the older verification feature.

For security reasons, two-step verification is widely used today in all manner of apps, systems and websites. Popular social media apps and website from companies such as Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB) and Twitter Inc (NYSE: TWTR), to name a few, make use of two-step verification. Google claims that its aim with the new changes is to make sure that the process is much faster and less annoying. The company plans to launch the feature soon for both Android and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) operating systems.

iPhone users will have to install the Google Search app on their mobile devices and turn on the functionality, even when the two-step feature is already in use. Yes, you still have to pull out a mobile device and accept the push notification, so a phone isn’t totally out of the mix, but it’s a whole lot easier to tap one button.

To activate, users need to login to their Google account, go to “Sign-in and Security,” then “Signing into Google,” then “2-step Verification.” In there, users find the option to replace the two-step method. In the mobile app space, Twitter and Facebook are already using a similar feature, although Google has further simplified the process.
